How to prevent Heat Exhaustion and Heatstroke 27 Jun, 2018

There are preventative measures that we can easily put in place that will help with the prevention of both heat exhaustion and heatstroke.

  • Keep infants and children out of the sun during the hottest parts of the day, normally between 11 am and 3 pm (during excessively hot weather).
  • Try to keep infants and children in the shade, apply sunscreen to them and encourage them to wear a hat.
  • Under no circumstances should they be left in a parked car.
  • Do not allow children to undertake extreme physical exertion.
  • Give them plenty of cold drinks, but avoid drinks that contain caffeine.
  • Give them cold foods, particularly salads and fruit that have a high water content.
  • Sprinkle water over their skin or clothing, or keep a damp cloth on the back of their neck and keep their environment cool.
